How do I get rid of spiders in my home?

My 92 year old friend keeps large vases of dried eucalyptus in her home; one in her front room, main hallway and kitchen. She claims this rids her home of spiders.

Living in Florida I do have spiders at certain times. Mating season I guess. They seem to come out during the evening. I use to kill them by swatting them, but found out that the baby spiders scatter all over. I now use foam cleaner and that stops them in their tracks. It certainly has cut down the spider population tremendously. Other than that, perhaps an exterminator would solve the problem,
