How do I convert an AVI file for my iPod?

I want to Put a movie onto my iPod but Its an AVI File.. How do I Convert it to a file thatll work with itunes, without having to pay for anyting,or download anything thats not going to work?

For movie files to go onto an iPod, I believe you have to put run them through Quicktime. Otherwise iTunes won’t sync it. You can download the latest version of Quicktime for free at their website.
