How can my frizzy hair be calmed?

Asked by gail13 over 2 years ago, 5 answers.

My hair is very thick, but it gets wavy and frizzy and goes wherever it wants when I take it down. So I straighten my hair and wear it down, but when I straiten it it feels too thin, it has NO volume and it gets more frizzy. What should I do or are there...

any good haircuts that would make my hair look better?

I would reccomend to see a professional . Most salons will give a complimentary consultation specifically to your hair type, style, and your lifestyle. You may opt for layers to give fullness and maybe a product (mousse or thickening spray or lotion) to give volume at the roots. To tame frizz, Frederic Fekkai makes a product called glossing cream that works great for thicker or coarse hair to give shine silkieness- also a great heat protectant when using your Flatiron.

I'm a hairstylist.

Baby oil.

Trust me on that one. I find that it works better than ANY salon quality product. Rub it in your hands, smooth it through your hair and blow dry it while scrunching it up to enhance curl.

You'll thank me for it.

Get what's called a Marilyn brush. It's a round brush with natural animal bristles and a wooden handle. The longer your hair, the bigger brush you can get. Section off hair and start with it approximately 50% damp. Pick up a small section of hair with the brush, wrap it around and blow dry it outward and downward with your hair dryer nozzle following closely behind the brush--about an inch or two away from your hair. Keep doing this from root to tips, with long, outward, downward motions. If you notice your wrists and arms hurting--loosen up. Once you get the hang of it, it's easy and light to do and doesn't require a lot of tension from you. Let the brush do the work for you. Don't worry about getting it perfect. Once you have completed drying all your hair this way, then run a large curling iron (get a good one that gets up to at least 430 degrees farenheit through the sections. Some people's hair curls again very fast, some very little once you straighten it with a blow dryer. So just listen to what your hair tells you. You may only need to go through it to tame the frizzies. Also I like Proclaim's (you can get it as Sally's) glossing cream. Once you're down blowdrying, use VERY LITTLE and evenly apply throughout hair to tame frizzies and add shine.

If you are totally lost, go to a stylist and ask her to teach you how to do it at home.
Don't expect to pick it up overnight. It may take you several or dozens of tries before you get your system down efficiently.

Serum is crucial. It is pricey but lasts months...
