How can I get my black hair to look red?

I tried to dye my hair a copper red, but it turned out maroonish-black. What home remedies could I use to fix it? Why did It turn black-did I leave It on too long or not long enough?

bleach will get it to blonde
then dye it from there.
it proabably changed due to pool chlorine,
or simple fading.

Hair color comes out different on different hair colors. For example, what looks like a copper red on a person with naturally light hair would come out maroonish on someone with darker hair. The most imiportant thing is follow the directions exactly.
