How can I find a publisher?

I have written a novel and am going through 'the poor man's copyright' thing at the moment. I was wondering where I could find a good publisher. My book is a fantasy-based novel. I was also wondering if its true if you can find a publisher who will do your book for free if they like it enough? Any advice will help. Thanks.

Well, you could use an online service like LuLu. I am not too sure about 'free' publishing. I do know that most of the money involved in publishing is for marketing and production. I am personally creating a site called 'BookMoo'. It is still very very 'Beta' so it is not quite ready yet. I will be offering a place to display your writing and get some possible revenue while people read your story, and a way to market your writing to the public. If you create an 'e-book' then you could put a few dozen teaser pages on a site like this and give some info to buy your book from Amazon or even create a site of your own if you want to go the entrepreneur route. If it is the 'whole package' you are looking for.... well you really have to do it the hard way. You need an agent or a rep to try to sell your book to prominent editors in different firms. Then you need to get a lawyer so you don't get hosed by the legal mumbo jumbo. If the book sells enough copies after a given time frame then the publisher may sign you onto a deal for your next book (they usually don't pay much for the first book unless you get a huge load of royalties from huge sales). Then you are at the mercy of the publishing company. It is a good job honestly, but some people don't work good with the pressure and the deadlines. Very rare authors have created books that have made them a good amount of money with their first novel. But that all starts with finding an agent that will carry you to the next level.
