When you say the wound was self inflicted do you mean accidentally or intentionally?
If this was an accidental wound then he may simply be feeling the sting and trying to sort it out the only way he knows how. Simply reinforce that he is not to lick the wound, although if the wound is only minor then I would actually allow him to lick it, as this can be beneficial in some circumstances.
If however this was intentionally self inflicted then it suggests a problem such as stress or nerves. If this is the case then it will be better to get to the root cause of the problem rather than simply preventing him from licking the result of that problem. I'm not saying this was intentional but I know that when animals are under severe stress they often react in strange ways. I've often seen birds pluck out their own feathers and rabbits pull fur out of their legs, so I assume the same could happen with a dog.
If your dog is under stress you might want to think about why he is, and then sort out this problem, otherwise the self harming will just keep reoccuring.
My dog did the exact same thing. She's a Doberman and it's a mental disorder in their breed to where when they get bored they will lick themselves until they are practically self mutalating themselves. I don't know what breed your dog is but we went to our vet and she gave us this cream called LickGuard that smells and taste nasty. She also gave us some medication called clomipramine that will help heal the wound faster. We've been using these things for about a week and it's really worked. Go by your vet and ask for some; it should help.
