No I dont think it is a waste of time. I think religion has done a lot of a good and I would never deny people the comfort it brings them. Do I personally think it's a little ridiculous, well yes, but I wont deny it has its good side...

no, because without religion, we wouldn't learn about god and his word, and then the whole world would be all sin and do you know how bad that would be if everybody sinned and never learned about the good of god and the evil of the devil? and plus, how are we ruining the world when we are listening to god and we are doing good things unlike you people who don't believe in these things. now, im not trying to go against you guys, but its true, you guys are ruining the world more then us. but everyone is different though, so im not the one to tell you guys what to do. its your life, so have fun!

Well there's a good counter-argument for religion right there: The xenophobia and 'us vs them' it introduces. Apparrently we're all second class citizens (not to mention, evil, earth-destroying sinners) if we don't believe the same thing as you.

By the way, do you have figures to back that up? I'll start counting up deaths from religious wars, shall I, and you can start counting... what exactly?

I think the explanations religion gives for most things are stupid. However, as ty mentioned, people have been motivated by their religious beliefs to do some very good things throughout history, and still today. Obviously, the opposite is also true.

In general, religion is dangerous. It tends to promote irrational thinking, since it's inherently rooted in the irrational. It also promotes an us/them mentality that can be very destructive, as well as promoting blind obedience to authority, which is extremely dangerous. It gives people a false sense of hope that death is not final, and thus encourages foolish docile behavior.

The only good I can think of that comes from it is it acts as a social outlet for a lot of people who might otherwise have none.

It has it's good a bad points...Having religion in order to get thru life, face trials and tribulations, addictions, a sense of purpose for individual pain...it can add stength and power to go face to face with things that might make others crumble...

To close one's mind, and believe that THEIR way is the ONLY way is arrogance beyond my scope...after all they are simply humans too...so why would I take THEIR word for anything??? and lets face it...millions have died forcing what they believe down another's throat...There's a hell of lot of difference between MY will be done, than THY will be done...

For myself...I will keep my mind open, and pay attention to the crap that goes on around us, as well as to the tiny miracles that I see happen...and come to my OWN conclusion...It's a journey, that's all it is...beginning to end.

well we have to realize that when you say religion we seem to be thinking about those religions that believe in God. I'm Wiccan I believe religion can be important to a person, but some take it to far wich makes it dangerous. No I dont think religion is stupid, I do think certian religions is rediculous though.

I remember each year of school I would donate near $50 dollars for pasta for pennies(raising money for cancer). One time well over a hundred! I did it because I've seen what the effects of cancer are. If I had really cared for winning pasta that bad, for as much I donated I could of bought some. The rest though, they donated in hopes to win a pasta party. I remember listening to them scolding other students, telling them to bring change so they could eat pasta, they didn't care about the victims of cancer as much as they did the pasta, most of the ones, if not all, who were doing so were Christian. Every year around Yule I donate all the change I have some for those less fortunate. Others pass without a passing glance e, wearing crosses or the star of David, noise so high in the air it could catch the rain.

You don't do any more good than the rest of us. You just USE MONEY THAT COULD BE USED TO DONATE FOR ADVERTISEMENT! So no, you don't do any more good. You waste our time money that we could be using to donate to those less fortunate or spending on family. The only good biblical religion it teaches is morals to the idiots how to live life for those who can't think for themselves.

No, I don't. Take the Ten Commandments into consideration. What would happen if it wasn't a moral to not murder, not steal, not lie, no respect, ect. Think about that.

We're perfectly capable of constructing our own, secular moral codes. In fact, no western government is based on the 10 commandments, yet people get along just fine. Modern legal systems cover a much broader scope than the 10 commandments, too.

For that matter, how do you suppose people got along _before_ the 10 commandments? Did they need god to tell them it's wrong to kill each other?

Religion isn't stupid, it's psychotic. Religion is for people who absolutely must have some reason to justify their existence because they refuse to accept the fact that they are nothing more than a complex chemical reaction. Religion is delusional as well; it fosters extreme intolerance and the strong desire to push irrational and dangerous behavior on anyone and everyone who doesn't share you same flavor of delusional beliefs.

The fact that religion is so prevalent throughout Planet Earth is a testament to the fact religion will ultimately be the death of us all. Religion is nothing more than an extreme, socially acceptable, form of racism and intolerance.

I believe in my wife, my dog and the people in my life that make me whole. I am absolutely terrified of sheeple who blindly accept irrational nonsense which has a proven history of death and destruction.
