I agree with Ameoba. At three a chld should be able to tell you what he wants, needs and feels.

Boys do tend to learn to talk slower than girls, but are generally able to speak clearly by two and a half years. By three he should be speaking almost clearly. He should be able to communicate if he is thirsty or hungry and if his tummy hurts, should have a clear understanding of things like the name for his eyes, nose, ears and where to find them etc.

Children are very smart. They are like little sponges. If you speak to them constantly in a happy voice and praise them often they will learn very quickly. Hope this helps.

uhm ok I'm not entirely sure what your question is
But yes babies do understand us, they understand a lot sooner than they are able to communicate (for example they understand speech and can use sign language to communicate back long before they are actually able to say words...)
But they also learn by guessing... for example if you tell them something and they dont understand, they will simply guess it (like say you tell them to bring the box) they will simply do something, sometimes they get it right, sometimes they dont...

Dear sexy_boy,
We can teach babies how to sign language at a very, very young age. They begin to understand very young but are not able to articulate what they want to say. This is why the sign language has been so successful. At 3 a child should fully understand all the basics, but are yet to be able to form the words to communicate back. But remember unless they have been taught the word they will never know what it means. So a constant dialogue with your child is the key...Example: while standing at speak clearly and with much animation; words such as look at mommy doing the dishes, there is a lot of soap in the sick, show the child soap when you say this, Mommy likes to wash the dishes and smile...this is the type of dialogue that teaches a child good communication.
Sue...good luck

am I missing something? sign language as a method of communication for a three year old? is this because you believe they are unable to use speech or just stating the fact that a child that age can learn sign?
between age two and three years, your child should be able to answer basic questions using at least three-to-five word sentences. children this age have a vocabulary of at least 450 words.
by approximately thirty months of age, your child should be able to produce all the vowel sounds correctly. for many children the ability to say all consonant sounds develops more slowly.
I do agree that verbal communication with your child is the most important thing a parent can do.

sign language is used with very, very young babies such as 6 months. So it tells us they are able to communicate but are not able to use speech yet. By the time they are 3 you are correct they should be able to use speech to communicate.

sorry, but the way it is worded sounds as if you thought that at 3 they were unable to form the words to communicate back.
that is why I said that I must have missed something...

I have just heard on the news that some child psychologist guy has taught babies at 9 months to be able to read basic words such as teeth and toes and are able to point to them when shown the word. It's pretty cool. I wouldn't personally call a 3 year old a baby though.

my sister is 3 and she wont shut up. I have pretty much raised her from the time she was 1 until 6 months ago. Babies learn from what the see and hear. Unlike desi4life she doesnt know what she is talking about. Kids at an early age learn signlanguage from daycares. its very easy to teach babies to sign. I taught my sister to sign. Just dont do any baby talk to your kid. talk to them as you would a person. they learn a lot better.
