And what is the real meaning? Specifically?

It has different meanings for different people...you call it christmas, I call it something else. Christ has no place in my winter solstice, as I don't believe in him.

For me, the holidays is a time for family and selflessness - helping others and peace among all people.

So, while I do agree with you that materialism has taken over, I don't agree that it's a time to celebrate the birth of Christ.

Sadly, I think that flew out the window decades or centuries ago. Personally, I think the real meaning of Christmas is being with family and having a nice day together. But most days now, it's all about feasts, christmas presents and sweets. But some people don't even have family or homes, let alone presents or food. I just think it's so sad what people take for granted nowadays. =o(

If Jesus did exist, it's highly unlikely he was born in late December. As ichibanarky indicated, modern Christmas festivity has its origins in the pagan winter solstice of several cultures.

Agree with kingofpop and ichibanarky. Christmas is original a pagan celebration of the winter solstice. So what is taking over what?

It is there, it just gets buried underneath tradition, and busyness...

I personaly think Christians should completly rethink this day, and restructure all activities concerning it.

However, since Christianity is not a legalistic religion, that is left open to each individual believer, as to how, they choose to celebrate.

And this is a glorious thing... Praise God.

Why not become a trend setter???

It does not have to be...

Go against the flow, and figure out how you want to celebrate the season.

Be a trend setter.

Establish a new pattern.

I hear this desire echoed often... so you are not alone.

Figure out a way that is pleasing to you, and be pleasantly suprised at how many around you would be willing to join in.

To the Christian.. Christmas... is about Christ.

Some things I keep about are the little figurines of our nativity set. Just a reminder every time I go by it... the realization of the birth of our humble son of man, Holy Son of God!
