Can the city take my dog for not getting shots?

Asked by tycoon about 1 year ago, 4 answers.

I haven't gotten shots for my Shitzu in a long time. He looks healthy. I just don't want to spend the extra money. Is it illegal to do this? Can they take him from me?

That depends on where you live. You will definitely be fined by most places. Check your local county laws for Rabies vaccinations as well as Distemper/Parvo vaccinations.

In Ontario we have a law which states all animals have to have their shots. Last year they even went door to door and if you didn't have proof or tags you received a $250 fine per dog.
We in ontario also have a time of the year where there is a clinic to have you pets get their shots for $10.

yes they can, and yes in most states it IS illegal to not have (at least certain) vaccinations up to date. not to mention this makes you an irresponsible pet owner. it doesn't matter if your dog 'looks' healthy, it NEEDS vaccinations, just like people do. you wouldn't deny an infant vaccinations, would you? don't get pets if you aren't willing to spend the money to give them proper care. it is irresponsible.
