What will keep flies from going on horses?

Feed Time Asked by pcm_kj 8 months ago, 6 answers.

I have been told that there is a mixture of Citronella and Rosemary that will keep flys from the horse' face and tail/body, has anybody heard of this remedy or is there any other ways of making a spray that will keep fly's off horses

You can buy face guards that keep flies away from horses eyes during the day, that you remove at night. As far as sprays are concerned, I don't know...make sure you consult a Vet before you spray any 'remedies' onto your horses skin, as it could cause a reaction.

Actually the masks work great...day AND night...We don't have a problem except in the summer, but I leave them on all the time except when we ride. The only thing you have to watch for is if the velcro thing under their jaw starts to rub...

We've used a mixture of lemons and rosmary and tea oil for fly strike on the dog's ears during the summer...

2 quarts water...2 large lemons (thinly sliced)...2 tablespoons rosemary...2 teaspons of Tree Tea Oil...
Boil water...drop in lemon slices and rosemary...let steep overnight...when it's cool in the morning, add tree tea oil...shake. For the body. put in a plant spray bottle...for around the face and ears, use gauze or a clean cloth, to wipe.

This also keeps the mosquitos at bay, as well as fleas...AND it makes coats shiny and healthy.

...it's your decision whether you use the face guards day AND night, but since there are less flies around at night...it's not a bad idea to give your horse a break from the face guard when you can.

We have mosquitoes at night...and since I work nights, the fly's are in full force by 8 am in the summer...My husband's horse seems to be extremely sensitive to the flys around his eyes...almost like an allergy...so it's best for us to use them all the time. Basically, I'm saying they don't impede their eyesight at night.
