America: lucky or selfish?

the sky and sun amazing things Asked by cambei 18 days ago, 3 answers.

I believe we truly have a lot in America. And I also see how much I have and how free and happy life is for me. I used to not see that before. It's because my parents have told me we don't have a lot. They've said it my whole life. But look at this! We...

have a house! My cousins, also Americans, in the very same free country, have moved from apartment to apartment their whole lives. They haven't had a steady school where they could make friends, and so that is just one example of how much I have. I'm also talking about America versus the world. We have the freest country in the world, I see. China may be smarter, but they are also overworked.
But for God's sake I have it way better than about 20% of America. Even some of my friends live in the ghetto neighborhoods, 'scuse the stereotype. I just want my parents and friends to be grateful. I mean genuinely grateful. I want to shock them like I shocked myself. Where one day I just saw 'Oh my God. This is my life.' And then I remember when Drama Club was almost taken away from me, and how I love it so much. When it wasn't taken away, I was so happy. But last time I was there I saw people goofing off instead of writing our script for our play. They paid $65 dollars for joining the club and they don't even appreciate it. They don't appreciate this amazing thing that I, myself love.
I wish people could see this life and happiness the way I do. But when I tried to do so with my mom she only got mad at me and complained about our bills. sad

Youre very right nobody really knows how good they have it. I know my family was strugleing and living in apartments for a few years. and no one realizes what they really have and they dont think about how some people dont even have a home and they just keep wanting, and one day it will bite back at them...

Aww, my mom is negative about things too.
However, I am sort of like you. I used to live in a VERY bad neighborhood (many people consider it a ghetto). I didn't realize it was bad when I was younger because I grew up there, and when I moved to a much better place, I realized how bad I really had it and that I should be grateful for where I am now.
I guess the answer to the question is America lucky or selfish would be both. I have to honestly say that yes, I am a selfish person, where sometimes if I'm not in the right mood I think negative of my life when in reality it is such a wonderful thing.
However, some people just grow up with such wealth that they don't understand how good they have it. I'm a firm believer that you have to see bad to truly enjoy the good. For example, if you had no idea what true sadness was, then you would not feel grateful for the happy times you have.
So yeah, I agree with everything you said. I wish my mom would stop thinking negative, as well. But it's truly impossible to change the way people think. They have to learn it themselves.
