The war agains Iraq was an illegal war- one the United Nations would not agree to- France is a member of the United Nations and respects its rulings.
Put it another way- if your Mom wouldn't support you in doing something illegal, like killing your friends, she would still expect you to help her with the household chores, wouldn't she?
Ps Britain didnt support the Americans in going to war with Iraq either- the British Parliament did- despite mass protest and demonstrations by millions of us brits.
I still don't understand why the United Nations have't punished Blair and Bush .
Your President isnt that clever, so he says and does a lot of bad and stupid stuff, so I wouldnt be suprised if the French people didn't like him.
I am sure that most French people have nothing against Ameican people themselves, although it is true that a lot of Europeans do generally consider most Americans to be a bit thick (you did vote George Bush to be your president after all- not very clever)
in response to your funmail
Well, I dont know every British person, but I am a very gregarious person with broad social and professional contacts. I have only met one person who supported America making war upon Iraq at the time.
So, you already met a Brit who's experience and opinion is the opposite .
That's the good thing about uncensored communications- the more you communicate, the bigger the picture you get.
You seem to think that if people don't support America on this issue, then they don't support America or Americans- period. Am I correct?
Just to add; when I said 'thick' I should, perhaps, have said 'naiive' or 'gullible'
Yes, yes. And we should have annexed France, Germany and Japan and the end of the war. <--sarcasm
Girly, it's a bit hard to answer a generalization such as "Are the French selfish?" All of them? No. Some of them? Yes. Are Americans selfish? Same answers. As pertains to the war, satsuma hit the nail on the head. The "war" was more or less an act of one small group (our government) without the support of the rest of our world partners.
As satsuma said, we have a moron leading our nation. I think she was nicer about it, but there it is. I wouldn't necessarily agree that the American people did elect him once, let alone twice, but he is in office however he got there. As far as selfish and small-minded, there was an attempt to re-name french fries to freedom fries. That to me says a bit more about a lack of character than objecting to the slughtering of people you've never met.
Ok, it cut off about 90 percent of my post. That was sarcasm.
The rest of the post went on to decry the war and agree with satsumamoon and
state that of course not every French person is selfish, but some are just as no
nation is comprised of only people of one type of character. Are Americans selfish?
Same answer. Some are. Some are not.
I believe there was also a bit in there about the absurdity of the "freedom fries".
The French didn't approve of the reasons for this war (as lots of people above have already said).
Just like the Americans, the French do think that their country is the best place to live and their way of life is the best in the world. That's bound to cause conflict between the two nations, although it's good to be proud of your country.
I live in France and have both French and American friends. They can learn to get on with each other so long as they realise that there are good points to both the US and the French ways of thinking, and not to try to force their ideas on each other. I even have three American friends married to French men, and that's working out fine!
The people who go on about the French being into surrender etc are really dangerous. They tend to have no idea about the actual history of France, or its politics. I see absolutely no sign of cowardice or a tendancy to surrender in either the French people or their politicians. It's just a dangerous 'spin' put on the events of history by people who want to cause one nation to hate another.

My mom read about the french and said that "they don't support americans. And they didn't help us in war when we suspect it and they suspect us to help"?
