I am doing that too. You need a teacher. You can Use Youtube to learn guitar but it took my friend one year to learn its much better like me to take lessons.

You should take guitar lessons on The basics. Then when your done with that teach yourself the rest. Teaching yourself allows you to learn more then someone else to teach you it all. That will probably take you about a year or two! Trust me you are a better guitar player if you teach yourself!

Take Lessons. Learn either to read tabs or music. That doesn't take too long. You won't find many places on the internet that will provide accurate guitar tabs as most of them are created by dumb kids who are apparently tone-deaf.

It will take you as long as it will take you. Some people pick up on it quickly. Some never quite get it. Everyone is different and everyone's desired skill level is different. Also, knowing how to play guitar and having the dexterity to truly play it are sometimes completely different things.

I've played classical guitar since I was smaller than a guitar. (Not kidding). So I'm very into teaching myself how to play. I did take some lessons for a while, but did not like it.

I found out that the most easy way of teaching yourself is to listen to, and play along cd's. And pick a band that is easy. Like old The Cure records. Buy yourself a tuning box if you need help to get your guitar tuned, and don't buy the cheapest guitar or strings.
By now I'm playing electric guitar, bass, drums and I play in a band in Norway, and learning to play the piano. (Trying).
Good luck.
