10 month old - throwing fits during diaper changes

The Fiance and Me at a Luau Asked by mandyloo 6 months ago, 10 answers.

My son Noah, in the past week has been freaking out every single time I change his diaper. He screams like your hurting him, arches his back, and will do anything he can do turn over or get away from you. This only started recently and I wouldn't be too...

worried if his re-action wouldn't be so dramatic and so terrible. I have no clue what to do, I've tried distracting him with toys, my cellphone, snacks, etc while changing his diaper and nothing is working.

I took him to the doctor, and nothing is physically wrong with him. The only thing I can think of, is last week we took him to get x-rays done and they had to hold him down and he freaked out on them and wouldn't calm down for over 10 mintues, do you think that maybe he is associating getting his diaper changed with being held down for x-rays?

at work you can see stuff in the back lol =] Answered by gorgous on May 06, 2009, 01:54PM

He might. Let him runaround a little while w/o the diaper, and then try getting on him. Perhaps he needs a little break.

It's quite possible - children that age are easily traumatized.

He will eventually realize that you're not trying to hurt him, but in the meantime, just try to be patient and calm with him when he starts getting upset - if he sees you getting upset, too, it will only make it worse.

He may be associating it with the xrays, but almost all babies do this eventually...Try buying a little bag of those shiny metallic stickers and distract him by putting them on his arms, hands or feet when you change him. I did the same thing with my little girl when she went through that stage and it worked great!

just hold him down while you change him thats what I'm going to do when I have a baby (not abusively or anything just like hold his hands back while I change him or something).

Whos babysitting these children? Sounds like there is trauma associating with diaper changing!! My daughter never did that nor my 12 neices and nephews!! My grandson is 8 months old and he doesn't react that way either!! But only our very close family Grandmothers watched the children, doesn't sound right to me. My daughter had to have xrays at 7 months never was she upset to have her diaper changed...

OK... My son just turned 1 year last weekend and has been putting up a fight during diaper changes since he learned how to crawl at 6 months. He just doesn't want to be forced to lay down and not be able to play. I sing and play itsy-bitsy spider on his belly sometimes to distract him and other times after I get him clean I just let him run free for a few minutes. It is very normal and probably not a result of having x-rays done. And to the above person, no one other than me has watched my son or changed his diapers EVER, and there has definitely not been any traumatic event or situation!

I agree. The only people who have ever watched my son are close family. All of whom adore him, it is just a normal stage they go through. And he sort of did it before his x rays too, but I wasnt the one asking the question, so why did you feel the need to comment on MY advice korlando59 ?
