Why is my xbox 360 mtu failing?!

okay, so I got an xbox 360 a couple of days after christmas, and I've been trying to connect it to xbox live, via my laptops wireless connection.
I've done all of the connection tests and they all pass. I can share my music to my xbox, so there's no problem there at all.
Everything passes up until the MTU test, I know that the xbox live requires 1394 to 1500(roughly) - so I set my MTU to 1492.
still it is failing, I've restarted the console, and my laptops lots of times - and I've also unplugged my wireless router and plugged it is again, my router is Netgear, I checked online and it is definately compatible.
I've unplugged and plugged back in the connection running to my laptop from my laptop aswell... I'M TOTALLY STUMPED!
Really in need of help, what could be another cause of these problems? it's driving me crazy! Please help!
