Mass media, I think. Stereotypes exist even in the US...eg, if you're from the deep south, you might:
wave the confederate flag
think the wrong side lost the civil war
think the bible was written in English
I grew up in Oregon, and I live in California. When I went to visited family in California, people would say:
Where's Oregon?
Do you live on a farm? (i didn't, neither did my friends)
Do they even have malls there (yep, got one when I was in middle school in Medford)
etc, etc. You might also say the US is a Christian country however, the US is home to lots of different faiths.
Similarly, because a lot of people haven't traveled the world over, a few times, they might have strange ideas about people in other countries if they are from the US. Media tends to distort things, reality is both more strange and beautiful than you'd ever imagine watching TV or reading the newspaper. Far, far better to visit strange lands and meet the people there. You'll have more in common than you might think.
Hope that helps.
For instances, I was born and raised in CA. in the bad neighborhoods of LA and people assume i have a bad temper and have a fuc*ed up attitude...it's not true but what many californians go throught..whether its paying the rent, bills, putting up with traffic etc... makes people have this low fuse or temper..!but when i came to the south people were surprised they would tell me and be shocked that i was nice to them and not all thinking i am the sh*t! So forget what people say..its endless...!
Omg. That is the most stupid thing I've ever heard. I'm sorry that you're going through all this. Where a person comes from does not mean anything. It wouldn't matter if you came from the moon. You're still a human being who deserves a bit of dignity and respect. Anyone who gets on your back needs to get a life. They're nothing but bullies. Just be yourself and don't let them get you down. Eventually they'll come to realise that what they're saying is ridiculous and unfair. And if they don't want to make peace, well it's their loss. You'll still have your friends to stick by you no matter what. =o)
