The government defines 'poor' as anyone eligible for government cheese. Everyone else is 'rich'.

My concept of poor involves lacking in basic necessities to a degree that impacts health or life, and is not so much a monetary thing. The royalty of centuries past would have gladly traded places with those considered 'poor' in the US today. Our 'poor' are fabulously wealthy in comparison to humans of old.

I think your question relates to poverty in physical terms, which toadaly described very well, and also to poverty in spiritual terms.

A lot of us in the west are spiritually poor, I think. As toadaly says, we have more 'stuff' than anyone would have dreamed of in past centuries, but instead of being satisfied we want more. That sort of materialism would seem to be a type of spiritual poverty.

I'm poor. Well not really, but my monetary needs are never really met because my family has 5 kids. It really sux. A poor person is usually related to money, but lack of something in life is feeling poor. There are many kinds of poor. It's a feeling, a state of emotion, it's many things.
