Which earthquake was worse?

Which earthquake in san fransisco was worse the one in 1906 or the one in 1989?

The one in 1906 killed a lot more people, but the one in 1989 did a lot more physical and monetary damage. So I guess it depends on what you think of as worse. Earthquakes are inevitable, so people have to decide whether it's worth the risk to live in earthquake prone areas. With billions of people along the Pacific rim of tectonic plates, I don't think they'll all be moving to the midwest any time soon.
