animal shelters are a very good place to look. the way I see it - those pets need a home and someone to love them - and to get them out of the shelter so that they can have a meaningful life.
yeah- I am a softy when it comes to animals, they give unconditionally.
definately try the shelter, should be one near you somewhere.
I live in the country, so I always see signs for free puppies or kitties.
Please don't go to a pet store.
The animals there are often from puppy mills--where mother dogs are kept in cramped cages and forced to breed OVER and OVER again--with little exercise or medical care.
The puppies are kept in cramped cages in horrible conditions and then sold to pet stores. The puppies are often sick and not neutered/spayed/vaccinated--which means a LOT of money. they are expensive, too.
Going to a shelter ensures a few things:
1. You are saving the puppy's life
2. The puppy will have been checked by a vet, given vaccines, and spayed/neutered
3. The puppy will be healthy
4. The adoption fee will be less than a pet store fee.
DO NOT BUY FROM A PET STORE!!! You not only inadvertantly support puppy mills, but you'll spend a lot of money on a dog who's almost guarenteed to cost you much more in the future...
A shelter is a good place to find a dog...go with an idea in your mind of what you're looking for...so you don't end up with being one of those I didn't know he was going to get so big types, who return their dog-child to the shelter...

First you should decide on what kind of dog you want. Then do some research on the breed, you have to make sure that the breed fits your lifestyle.
Then 1st check craigslist, pennysaver, the recycler. You should also check out the shelters or do a search for rescue groups.
If you need help doing some of the research enlist friends but please do NOT buy from the pets stores!!
Pedigree.com
You type in your zip code and you will see a list and photos of puppies and dogs.
Thru pedigree your adoption cost will be very low, I saw a maltese I liked it was $25.00.
If you get one from the shelter it will be spayed or neutered before you take it home (included in the adoption price) or if not old enough you will be able to take it back at no charge when it's old enough. The adoption price will include worming and shots.
Find 2 or 3 you like and then spend time with them. Take them outside for a walk.
When you take it home it will take some time for it to get use to its new home.
I have 2 dogs.
