How good are your sewing skills? I'm about to start sewing my wedding dress, and it's along the same lines as what you're describing (strapless, A line) and it's a really simple pattern. I've used this pattern before on formal dresses and I've managed to cut out the pattern and get it stitched up in a little under 4 hours. If you did this, you could go for just plain fabric for the dress, and then find a nice bridal iron-on transfer, or some iron on diamantes to do detailing with. If you're really feeling creative, you can sew some beads onto the gown.

Ask around to your friends and family. Lots of people have wedding dresses saved and don't know what to do with them. If they are boxed up and heirloomed, make sure you look at a wedding picture with the dress because you don't want them to open the box if you aren't going to like the dress. They'll have to get the box resealed if you do that.

Craigs list is a good place to start, other wise you can always search for whole wedding dresses, you can usually find some great dresses at a good price. Best of luck!

I went to a wedding shop to try on dresses. I found the dress I wanted and wrote down its brand and dress name, then I looked on ebay and found a lady selling the same dress in 2 sizes too big for half the price that was brand new with tags so I bought it and had it taken in by a professional dressmaker for £65. There was no risk because I knew it was right for me because I tried it on and I knew the dressmaker would make it fit perfectly. dont buy one without trying it
