What a metric unit? I heard someone say that on tv, so yeah, what is it?

The first standardized system of measurement, based on the decimal was proposed in France about 1670.

Units of measure of length: millimeter, centimeter, meter, kilometer
Units of measure of volume: liter (with the various prefixes)
Units of measure of weight: grams (with the prefixes)
Units of measure of area: square meter, hectare

But most of the world uses the metric system (Canada, Britain are examples), America is one of the few countries that doesn't used it.
