What type of counselor is this?

You can do it in the criminal justice system or to the general public as a psychologist/pyscotherapist. You can be a youth counselor in high schools. It depends which set of people you care to help. Just look up jobs and descriptions at your favorite job site (example: careerbuilder.com)

Well, you are right Counseling is a big field, but the genral idea is the same. You will work with people in groups and/or individually. It just depends on what population you would like to service. Evaluate yourself and your interest. Who do you feel would get the best out of you. I wanted to be a school counselor for years, but I settled on being an educator and staying in the class for now. I also thought about counseling in a rehabilitaion center for youth.

I suggest 1st decide if you like to work with youth, teens or adults. Then decide what type of setting, public or private. Then you have to enroll in a Master’s program to get your degree. Once you are done you will be ready to explore the world of public service.

I would suggest trying to find some sort of placement test. Find out what interets you! For instance, If you have had no experince with drugs, and have not working knowledge of drugs and there effects, it might not be wise for you to coose drug counsling. If you feel comfortable around teens and can communicate well then look into teen counsling. It’s hard for other people to tell you what you like. Maybe start by taking the basic classes to get started and once your in the field your knitch will find you, by reading about several different areas. Also talk to people who are in the field. They should be able to tell you the pros and cons.
