What's the story with open-ended tickets?

I am interested in buying airline tickets that will allow me to to return home on the day of my choice. I need the flexibility to choose my day of return flight. Can this be done with open-ended tickets? What is the down side to this type of purchase?

Yes, open ended tickets allow you to chose the day of your return flight. The down side is that they generally cost more money.
