The sabretooth tiger is just an original tiger but with 2 long teeth. Hence sabreTOOTH.
Its just a popular name for the group of animals. It also sounds better than 'sabretooth lion'
They're usually referred to as 'saber-toothed cats' which describes NUMEROUS species, mainly in the families Felidae. Their fossils have been found on every continent except Australia, I think...
They are Tigers because some guy called them a tiger. . . Sabertooth bobcat would be more like it. . .

What the first person said isn't correct. They're actually different from today's tigers in many ways.
First, the name describes many different species--it's just a catch all name.
Second, sabertoothed tigers were built more like bears, and were much larger than today's tigers or lions.
Lastly, they're extinct.
