WiFi is talking about the 802.11 standard for wireless networking that’s used with computers. Generally people with laptops or computers on different floors that don’t want to run cable, will set up a wireless network in their house. By the general nature of wifi, you don’t really have to pay for it…well, sometimes. However, having and using the wifi with free places won’t incur you any fees. If you don’t already have a wifi network in your house, the equipment is not that expensive and it will use your existing broadband connection.

Some places will offer free wifi access, the places that do generally vary by locale so, you’d have to go online or go scouting around town with your iPod touch to find it. Generally these places will have something indicating they have free WiFi or are a “wifi hotspot”

however wifi is not always free. some places require you to pay to use that particular hotspot. It’s difficult to tell which ones are subscription based, as they generally will appear as “unencrypted”, same as most free ones (however some places, like coffee shops, encrypt and secure their hotspots to prevent leeching from non-customers.) the majority of free hotspots will show up as unencrypted that your ipod touch will connect to. (if you have the proper network key, you can use encrypted ones too, naturally)

I’d suggest you’d go online and find some beginners guide to wifi networking, because if you’ve never used it before and have no idea how it works, you’ll have less success finding all the free internet you can (including places that don’t advertise) and getting it to work in places that do.
