What is the historical significance of roanoke?

I am not asking what Roanoke is I know that it was the first english setlment in North America. I just need to know the historical significance of it.

Early american colony (the first large scale one, if I'm not mistaken) and when the Europeans came back, the settelement was abandoned, and the mystery never solved as to where the people went, etc.
