What amount of swelling is normal after a tongue piercing?

I just had my tongue pierced on sunday, it doesn’t hurt but my tongue is swollen to a point where there are teeth marks on the sides of it. Is that normal? It doesn’t hurt or interfere with breathing and eating.. Oh and I rinse with antiseptic listerine. I suck on ice and drink ice water.. How long should it be swollen for..? Any tips to reduce the swelling? And when can I change the bar?

ok…if you want your piercing to heal up fast and right…listen to this.. I got my tongue pierced in December…the piercing place gives you a piece of paper that tells you to use listerine!!! Why???Because it kills the germs… killing the germs prevents infection. cut listerine half and half with water…and it will not make the swelling worse… you need to mouthwash after EVERYTHING you put in your mouth..if you smoke anything…use mouthwash..and as far as eating goes…chew soft food with care…and make sure you dont bite down on the bar. Take 3 ibuprofen every five to six hours to enduce the swelling…it will take about 5-7 days before you can tell the swelling has stopped. You can change your barbell in about 30 days prior to the first day having your piercing, but dont fidget with it unless one of the balls came loose. Hope this helps…

hey! it shoulod swell that much yea and it should be gone down mostly in a week.do NOT use listerine as that has alcohol in it and will make swelling worse.some salt water to wash your mouth out with,a teaspoon of salt to a pint of warm water, use that as mouth wash.nurofin also helps with reducing swelling. my boyfriends a piercer so its all drilled into me! take care!xxx

What you are describing sounds normal. As long as your tongue hasn’t changed in color, isn’t preventing you from breathing and doesn’t have strange discharge coming from it or you can’t feel it at all, you are normal.

The swelling will take about a week and a half to two weeks to go down, but it usually takes 4 months to heal properly. So I suggest waiting a couple of months before changing the bar.

I had my tongue done many years ago but I think it took around 5 days for it to start getting better. It was hard for me to eat though so that’s good you can do that without trouble.

Yeah just make sure you keep it clean with Listerine.
