That's really hard to explain, okay, let's try...
Well in order for something to burn it needs a flame and without that flame it wouldn't be burning. So someone could mean like without you I couldn't live.
I think-ish?
I know what I mean but I cant get to right words out haha

The person referred to has caused the writer pain in some way...that pain proves to the writer that he/she is still alive, and therefore, still has a chance to overcome the pain.
