What caused the tower of pisa to lean??

I never actually knew what caused the tower to become the leaning tower of pisa...
does anyone know?

my only guess is something like poor foundation or something like that, I once heard that there a was an earthquake that threw every one to one side of the tower and caused it to lean but im guessing thats just a myth or something..

I'm pretty sure it's because the soil underneath is weaker on one side.
