Tmobile and iphone

I am getting an iPhone 3g for my mom. Problem is that they are ATT and I need tmobile. After unlocking it, can I just get a sim off eBay, and pop it in (unactivated) and will it work? Or do I have to activate it with tmobile?

I don't know but you should NOT get tmobile, I had them for a while, they dont have service ANYWHERE itsss sooo annoying.
