This election holding true or ignoring ?

Asked by amblessed about 1 year ago, 6 answers.

Dr. M. L. King taught us that a person should be judged by 'the content of their character', not 'the color of their skin' - Do you see this election as holding true to this message or is it being ignored ?

Let's see...Content of his character...
Before John McCain's tour of duty in Vietnam, he married Carol Shepp, a
model from Philadelphia. On his 23rd bombing mission over North Vietnam
in 1967, McCain was shot down and captured.
While he was imprisoned, Carol was in an auto wreck (1969), thrown
through her car's windshield and left seriously injured. Despite her
injures, she refused to allow her POW husband to be notified about her
condition, fearing that such news would not be good for him while he was
being held prisoner.
When McCain returned to the United States in 1973 after more than five
years as a prisoner of war, he found his wife was a different person.
The accident, as McCain stated, left her 4 inches shorter and on crutches, and she had
gained a good deal of weight.

While still married to Carol, McCain began an adulterous relationship
with Cindy. He married Cindy in May 1980 -- just a month after dumping
Carol and securing a divorce. The newlyweds honeymooned in Hawaii.

And let us not forget...
In his 1992 Senate bid, McCain was joined on the campaign trail by his wife, Cindy, as well as campaign aide Doug Cole and consultant Wes Gullett. At one point, Cindy playfully twirled McCain's hair and said, You're getting a little thin up there. McCain's face reddened, and he responded, At least I don't plaster on the makeup like a trollop, you cun+ McCain's excuse was that it had been a long day.

Content of character. Yep, McCain has it...the question is, do we want his particular brand of character.

I agree with jimahl I see Obama as having tremendous integrity and character, and McCain is completely lacking in character, honesty and competency.

Let's see - ever since McCain almost got us into a nuclear war...well, I'm judging him by the content of his character.

As for the other guy, he hasn't messed up that bad, yet - so I'd like to give him a shot to put his foot as far into his mouth as the current president before I judge him happy

A lot of people are judging Obama by his skin color. Not voting for him because of his ethnic background is ridiculous. However, voting for him because you think it would make a statement to the world that America is past racism is also pretty stupid, in my view. Using that logic, why not elect Alan Keyes? He is a descendant of African-American slaves, unlike Obama, and that would certainly make an even bigger statement about us ditching racism. He's also reactionary and fundamentalist.

If you're going to vote for Obama, vote for him because you think he'd make sound military, foreign policy, and fiscal decisions. Those things will be his job; any racial significance of his election is completely irrelevant to that.

There is a certain percentage of voters who would never vote for Obama because he is black and there is a certain percentage of voters who will vote for him because he is black. Personally I don't care what a candidate's skin color is, I'm only interested in how well they can do the job. I do think it would be a major accomplishment for the US to elect a black president but the number one priority of an election must be to elect the best candidate for the job; not to make a symbolic gesture.

I enter this election with optimism because in my book either McCain or Obama would be so much better a president than Bush Jr. things have to get better either way. I still think Obama is the better candidate though.

The color of his skin has nothing to do with my feelings towards Obama. As filletofspam said, the benefits of electing a black man to office is secondary to the fact that he IS the best man for the job.

When compare the two of them I see Obama as having tremendous integrity and character, and McCain is completely lacking in character, honesty and competency.
