Which is the most powerful desktop processor available now? Has quad core processor reached the markets?

yup, I think quad core is not necesary thing, because not every programs or games are using 4 cores to calculate the information that you input, so if you want to buy it, you must consider what you spending your money for,

The fastest consumer CPU I know of is the Intel Core 2 Extreme QX9650 3GHz.

This a pretty expensive CPU. Depending on your load you may be better off investing less in your CPU and more in RAM or a bigger/faster hard disk.
