What I'd do is record a bunch of stuff at home - my brother makes his own CD's with a home computer & a few pieces of equipment, software, etc. They sound very good too, nearly professional quality & actually better, sound wise, than a good bit of what's on the radio.
Then once you have some demo's together, promote & distribute a song or two for free, and then charge for the other ones you make. There are some services that will help you do that, and once you get the money together from those, then you can afford to buy some professional studio time, if you still believe it would help.
To get started, since you're on FunAdvice, I'm guessing you have a computer, so the next step is software, microphone, etc.
OR you could get a part time job to save up the money & skip the computer stuff.
Good luck.
