It depends: does your site offer something people would pay for? If so, then definitely have subscriptions. Even if it doesnt', you might offer a "member's special" that allows people to use the site advertising free. Several sites do this, and seem to generate revenue, that way it's not an "either or" situation. Good luck.

What would you do under this scenario:
Starting out a childrens website.. Would you have membership fees or would rely on advertising revenue. Do you really get any clicks in adsense.. I got first click in 3 days after 100's of impressions. But this is a start and I know I have to be patient but before lauching the site I wanted to know whether you get any income from advertising from adsense? Otherwise I should charge membership fees to cover my expenses.
