I learned spanish in high school, then in college - both for four years. And then, I worked for three months at a job where I spoke spanish full time, and several years ago, I lived in Costa Rica for about eight months. I'm not fluent anymore, but can speak to a degree.
The destinos program is great, we watched it in our high school classes, very easy / useful. To learn become conversational, it takes 3-6 months, depending on how hard you work on it. To become fluent you need to speak spanish most of the day, all day, every day...and that will take up to a few years depending on how much prior spanish language training you've had.
Luckily, the grammer is pretty straight forward, and it's not nearly as complicated as English, once you know the rules, things get easier. And if you know any latin / french or italian, that'll help, because french italian are romance languages, as is spanish. Latin is helpful b/c some words in spanish can be more easily guessed if you know some latin. Good luck.
Hi,
Try http://www.ephisto.com, it's a new free site for learning Spanish online. It's still in beta but you can meet others, read articles and play games. There is also a blog with some language learning tips, I thunk it's http://ephisto.blogspot.com.
Buena suerte!
Hi!
I had picked up some Spanish whilst travelling through South America, and really wanted to carry it on when I got back, I found this website http://www.lessongod.co.uk and am basically fluent now. I had to work hard at it but it was very rewarding in the end. It is good as you are able to speak online with native spanish speakers, so you can really improve pronounciation!
Hope this has been of some help amigo!
Buena suerte!

I'm interested in learning Spanish online, but I don't know any good sites. Could you suggest some? Also, how long does it typically take to learn a new language ( specifically Spanish)?
