My wife uses a bikini area shaving gel. It seems to work quite well and no it doesn't hurt.

you can shave it or trim it down with scissors or something, or you can go and get it waxed, but if you are scared about it hurting if you have it there is nothing to worry about, it doesn't hurt to shave it as long as you shave in the right direction.
