Actually S.O.S may have many meanings today but originally it was a Naval term that stood for 'Save Our Ship' and the acronym S.O.S was used for transmittal of this message in morse code. When one ship in a fleet was disableed or under heavy attack and lost all other forms of communication, it would flash its searchlight at a friendly vessel in 3 short flashes, 3 long flashes, and then again 3 short flashes. Kind of like this (... _ _ _ ...). This would let the friendly vessel know of the troubles so they could come to the aide of their comrades.
S.O.S = Save Our Souls
