How do recyclable materials get sterilized or disinfected before becoming new items?

ie: Old newspapers become pizza boxes and pop bottles becoming milk jugs ect.

The machines (paper mills ect.) that create the new items usually have a whole section for sterilization in them, if that is required. In the case of recycled paper for example, the old paper gets dissolved in water, often chemically bleached (which also sterilizes) then the paper-mash gets cooked when then new paper is made.

PET plastics get washed, molten and then shaped into new items. The heat of the melting kills all germs.

Other recycled items (such as rubber mats that are made out of old tires) do not get sterilized, because it is unneccessary.
