Protecting my hair

I know straightening your hair without using a special spray gel or shampoo can damage it. Does anyone know a good product to help protect my hair from getting damaged without needing to stop straightening all together?

What kind of straightener do you use? Is it anything like a Permanent solution used to curl your hair?

I learned a neat tip a long time ago when I was in Cosmetology school.

I had given myself a permanent. Now, in the past, those didn't work on me. My hair just wouldn't curl. So, this time I decided to leave the permanent on a lot longer.

Well, when I took it down, it curled alright. It curled way too much. I went around with it that way for a week or two and decided I had to do something. It looked awful and I couldn't get a comb or brush through it.

To make a long story short, I used the same kind of permanent that I had used to curl my hair. But instead of using rods, I just combed in the solution instead, being careful not to touch the scalp (so I wouldn't irritate it).

I used the same directions but just w/o the curlers. I used some conditioner just as I would after shampooing. It worked great. My hair was straight and smooth and I didn't have to use any other product.

It's just an idea. Of course, use your judgement and do it at your own risk (my disclaimer).

There are some products you can use - but I'm not sure how well they work. I don't think anything is going to completely prevent your hair from all straightening damage. Just keep it really healthy by conditioning everyday. When you condition your hair be sure to leave it in for a good 5 - 10 minutes so it gives your hair the chance to soak up the nutrients.

I use this stuff by the brand 'Bed Head'. It's called 'Control Freak' It's actually a serum that is supposed to reduce frizz but it also protects from heat. The nice thing about it is it basically "dissolves" in your hair so it's still soft and can move around, not crusty.
