Is something wrong with my pokemon gold game?

Hello,
I just bought a used Pokemon Gold game and every time I save and shut it off it will only allow me to start a new game when I turn it back on. Am I doing something wrong or is the game messed up? Thanks in advance!

u might be shutting it off too soon, let the save finish until its done and it returns you to the game, and then shut it off.

My Ruby game is like that, If it says The Game File Has Been Deleted or something like that when you turn it back on then the game is broken. Sorry.
