Poisonous cterpillars??

I got like attacked by this caterpillar that looked like a leaf today. It was green and...well, OUCH. Are caterpillars like this poisonous?

I looked it up and I think it was a Plebian Sphinx Caterpillar.

I'm not sure, We have caterpillars here in Aust called spit fires when I was little they are green and hairy and would cause bad irritations in the skin. But they wouldn't cause any long term health problems.
