If you just want to get professional photos of yourself or a kid done you're paying for the packages. They can be really cheap into the hundreds of dollars area. The photographers need shots for their portfolios and the models need shots for theirs. It's a win, win situation as in everyone gets what they need and no one has to pay for it (color lab costs do apply sometimes). In a lot of cases, the photographer will know a make-up artist and stylist and they too will need pictures. You see, portfolios need to be constantly updated until you are working completely full time. In order to get there, you need to invest time.
