Why are women so obsessed with jewelry?

Why are women so obsessed with jewelery when it also poses a threat on their security? It is a physical hazard, speaking in Insurance jargon.

Jewelry is a status symbol, just like anything else. It's like a guy having an expensive car. Wearing high end clothing or certain shoes, carrying a certain designer handbag.

I've also heard the theory on wedding rings and bands that it was started so that if the man ran off or passed away, the woman would have compensation. (men originally did not wear wedding bands)

Plus jewelry is pretty.

they want to feel that they're women!!
and it doesn't have to look expencive!
but not all women! I'm not, at least not like other girls!
