peace! Asked by newpetmama10 26 days ago, 5 answers.

I am going to be getting a male (havanese) puppy aged 10-12 weeks. when do I have him nuetered? can I have his tail bobbed at that time? does tail bobbing hurt?

Tail docking is 100% unnecessary and is painful (even for the days old pups that have it done to them). They are cutting through BONE. Tail docking is usually done within the first week of life, while the bones are still pliable and small- to do it now would be incredibly painful for your puppy. They have nerves and nerve endings and feel pain as well as we do. It'd be like somebody cutting your spine at your tailbone, right above your butt. Please, please don't do that to him.
You can probably have him neutered when he's 4 months old- I've never had a male dog, but my best friend's puppy had to wait until he was 4 months old before any of the clinics here would neuter him.
I would recommend you buy a dog training book (especially for puppies), a medical book for dogs, and a book about dog nature- it'll make your lives together a lot more peaceful. And you'll be better informed and feel more in control right off the bat. happy

Ditto to kdsmm...forget the tail docking...it's too late...in many countries it's against the law to dock and crop,...it's a totally human thing, and unneccesary.

I've always had my dogs neutered at 6 months...before the hormones start really kicking in, but after the first 6 month growth spurt is over.

normally neutering age in 6-8 months for male and its also the same age for spaying female puppies. NO WAY to the tail bobbing thing normally its the breeder who docks the tail of the new littler and thats usually a few days after it's born so its not painful then because the nerves in the tail are not fully developed. looks like your pup is stuck with a tail.

Do NOT dock it's tail! There is absolutely no reason to. If you wanted a dog with a docked tail you should have gottne one. Sorry, but really? Some breeds need to have their tails docked for a reason, on those breeds you can actually feel whre the tail it thinner. On those breeds if the tail is left long all it would take is for them to knock their tail into a wall and it would break! But on a Havanese it is totally unnecssary.

The top vet colleges have been teaching for the last 10 years that for a dog that will mature under 40lbs you should really have it neutered between 8-12 weeks of age. That way it eliminates the surge of hormones that cause him to lift his leg, mark, hump, etc. It also reduces the risk of of several types of cancers. Also, it is a lot easier on the puppy, they are unconcious for about 10 mins and then up and playing like nothing happened. It is sooo much easier on him!!! Really, check online. I know Iowa State University does it, and has been for about 10 years. They say the only thing they have found is that they could grow an 8th of an inch taller.
