How can I tell my good friend that I'm not interested?

One of my good friends was happy to hear 3 months ago I got out of a relationship with someone. She wrote me a letter saying Ever since grade 9 I wanted to date you but you were never single and nows my chance, but the thing is I dont feel that was about her. I feel bad because shes been waiting for 3 years, but how am I supposed to tell her this without hurting her?

The direct way is the best way. Tell her you love her as a friend, but that you don't want to jeapordize that.
