what would you consider the best way to have energy without energy drinks and/or coffee in the morning? I need something that also aids in mental focus and alertness.

a good night's sleep doesn't seem to help. I still can't concentrate very well without constantly yawning. it could be my uncomfortable bed.

Try some fruit juice and a good breakfast.

On grad exam test days, my grandmother is reluctant to make sure that I sleep well. Id suggest 10-12 hours. that's supposed to be the suggested amount for teens I think. Eat a good hearty breakfast and drink orangejuice. ^from what you said above about your bed, that's probably it too. If you don't have enough green to get a Tempurpedic (most of us dont' hehe) then do what I did and put an air mattress over your regular mattress or box spring and if you want more cushioning, put one of those egg shell mattress toppers over the air mattress. Also there is anything around your sleeping area that would effect you (allergies, pets, sounds, windows, people, parties) then that would probably be a good idea to eliminate those negative things. Hope I helped, adios!

Exercise gets the blood flowing.
I have a sedentary job. Bicycling really helps stir up the insides and gets the oxygen machine going.
And...drink water. At least twice the water as the decaffeinated beverage. The two work together. Caffeine is a diuretic. Water helps the cells to purge. Alternate.

And take it easy on junk foods before bedtime. A salad or some comfort food might help.
But keep it light.

No news is good news before bed.
A book... quiet music... No television, unless it's a golf tournament.

hope this helps
