Unless he actually likes the subject, its going to be difficult. I was like that in school too.

Give him a snack or treat if he does do it...take him to a ball game/the movies...or yeah stuff like that...

Also you guys could make it more fun by using the words in a song, poem making creative ways of rembering it...

reward is one way of doing it, but it is dangerous when it comes to school work...
there needs to be other motivation for school work otherwise you will forever be rewarding everything he does...

And yeah, I was like that in school, I turned out ok...

ohh God help ya!!!...I am exactly like that and even I want to make Myself do my homework but I just Can't cause its sooo boring...
hmm...maybe show him some stories of people that didnt do well at school and turned out with crap lives :P...even though it's really unlikely to happen to him just cause of homework, you could still tell a white lie
