Will my parakeet be ok after laying 10 eggs?

My parakeet continues to lay eggs. I think she has laid 10 eggs so far because I did not know I was not to remove the eggs or she will keep laying. I finally went to buy a nest box and put inside the cage but am I too late? Will my parakeet be okay after laying so many eggs?

Hi,

I don't have birds, but I work at a shelter. And I found this online for you:

the problem with a bird laying eggs all the time is that it will deplete their calcium. they can also become egg bound, which, if untreated, will kill them. here is what you can do to help her:

1. get hormone shots. these are expensive. if you can find someone who will go in on the shot with you, it will be less. the problem is that the shot comes in a larger size, so even though you are using a small quantity for your bird, you have to pay for the larger dosage.

2. if you choose not to go with the shots, go to your local vet, be sure they have a bird specialized vet available, and get calcium drops. this will help her to keep from getting calcium depletion.

3. feed her well. try foods that are rich in calcium and nutrients. my little one, maggie, is absolutely obsessed with fresh spinach. other leafy greens (minus iceberg lettuce, of course) are good too. carrots, apples, and variety of fruits and veggies are great, and also some hard boiled egg can help.

for the eggs themselves, definitely take them out after a few days. she'll be fine, but it's not good to let her keep them to long, nor is it advised to give fake eggs as that will only encourage egg laying.

also helpful: covering her for 12 hours at night to sleep, keeping the cage bottom clean and clear of any nesting materials, etc.
