I would take him to another vet, the first vet may not be diagnoisng him corret.
Another thing you could do is take the dog back to the pound you got him from, I believe they have to take the pet back , However keep in mind they may just euthinze him and not spend the money to treat him;'
Or call your vet and let them know what has been going on and see what they say
Kennel cough is like a cold. It has to run it's course. Some Vets will not even give an antibiotic for it. You can go to the drug store and get Simply Cough for him. You can give him Childrens Mucenix but your dog will not die, he just sounds like he is going to.
My two Boxers picked Kennel Cough up from the Pound after they got out and spent the night there. I thought my male was going to die. He hacked and coughed and gagged and vomited in some cases. Almost all dogs in the Pound have it, it is very contagious. It is like a common cold or whooping cough.
I had an honest Vet that told e that I could give my dog Pen-Aqu or not, it wouldn't do any good and Simply Cough to relieve the coughing which was causing everything else.
As soon as your dog is better make sure that every year you give him a Bordertella shot with his yearly vaccinations. Because he will get this stuff every year, sometimes twice. It last about 10 days.
The Bordertella vaccination is the only thing that keeps them from getting it again and again and giving it to your other dogs.
You need to read up on Kennel Cough
magic - your use of 'pound' is not lost on me. how nice that you stick with such a cruel and antiquated word. Most of us have moved out of the last century and become a little more progressive...but then again...what more should I expect.
I am also surprised that you discouraged her from returning to the Vet. You are probably correct with your diagnosis, but should not assume to be some sort of telepathic vet who can be sure what is wrong.
Harley had it right (except for the pound part) she should call the vet or find a new one if the initial diagnosis was wrong.
I am sure that you understand that a 'cold' is viral and that bordetella bronchiseptica is bacterial. and treatable with antibiotics.
Given the experience of most on this site, do you really think is is wise to discourage them from taking their animal to a vet?

My dog has namonia
I Adopted A Dog And He Had Something Called Kennell Cough. We Took Him Home That Day And He Ate a lot... He Next Day He Was Basically Knocking On Deaths Door. We Took Him To The Vet And They Said That He Had Namonia. They Kept Him For 3 Days And 3...
Nights. They Gave Me Amoxcillia 250 And And Doxcicollain 50. He's Done With The Amoxicilla And And Has Only Like 3 Of The Doxcicycolin Left. He Still Coughs And Well 3 Days Ago He Ate Like A Pig. The Next Day He Ate Alright And The Next He Just Stopped HEatting. Now He Won't Eat At All. He Has a lot Of Yellow Crusty Stuff Around His Nose, And He Still Cough's. He Stopped Eatting Too... I Can Hardly Get Him To Eat. Pleae If Anyone Know's What Can Do Please Help. I Tried The Chicken And So Forth. Do I Have To Take Him Back To The Vet???
